One Minute Process Engineering: Optimize the Size of Two-phase Horizontal Separators

Many process engineers have good knowledge to correctly size two-phase vertical separators. However, when it comes to horizontal separators, a lot of them become confused. Are you one of them? If yes, you are in the right place and you will learn how you can size a two phase horizontal separator in just one minute in this video.

Just like my other blog on sizing a two-phase vertical separator (http://showcase.guofuchen.com/2015/03/optimize-size-of-two-phase-vertical.html), you can directly import process data from ProMax.

Once the process data is imported, all the nozzles are automatically sized based on the default criteria and you can override the diameter calculated by the program too.

Unlike the vertical separator, the horizontal separator diameter is required to specify. While for vertical separators, the vessel diameter is calculated. The program first assumes a minimum 12" disengagement height. Based on the terminal velocity, the liquid settling  time is calculated. By multiplying the liquid settling time and the vapor velocity in the disengagement area, the minimum vessel length is calculated to settle all the liquid.

In addition, based on the liquid surge and holdup time, the vessel length requirement is calculated as well. The program then picks the maximum length to both settle the liquid and satisfy the surge and holdup requirement.

The program further increases the disengagement height to 13" and more, until the minimum vessel length is found.

This horizontal separator has the same process data and hold up requirement like my other blog on the vertical separator at http://showcase.guofuchen.com/2015/03/optimize-size-of-two-phase-vertical.html. Both of them have 48" diameter. The vertical separator seam to seam length is 294", while the horizontal separator length is 288".

Besides, just like my other blog on vertical separators, you can optimize the vessel to have the lowest weight by simply click "Optimize" button. By increasing the diameter to 60", the vessel weight is reduced by about 1%.

With this tool, you are empowered to size a two phase horizontal separator in just one minute. Like this tool? Like this video and email the author at GChen@GuofuChen.com
